CDL employs a "user-centered" approach to digital library service design. By assessing the evolving research and information needs of the academic community, and responding to those needs through the development of usable web-based services, CDL works to support the University of California’s students, faculty, and library staff.
Examples of services offered by the Assessment, Design & Production team to CDL programs include:
- Focus groups and interviews are conducted during the exploratory stages of development or redesign to discover how work is currently performed, to identify unmet needs, and to uncover attitudes, preferences, and concerns.
- Surveys are conducted at any stage of development or redesign to gather information on current practices, trends, and the level of satisfaction with current services.
- Usability testing is conducted at several stages of design to uncover user usability interface deficiencies that prevent users from efficiently and successfully completing tasks.
- Functional and design specifications incorporating findings from assessment activities, including navigational design, page layouts, and user interaction design.
- Web site design and production, including a full range of front-end coding and design.
